Book Announcement
A limited number of copies of Dr. Pal's book "Step-by-Step Development of Tabla Compositions From the Ground Up," ISBN: 978-81-925835-0-1, are now available in the USA. The book shows how anyone, with or without any knowledge of tabla, can develop tabla compositions of any complexity by applying two simple principles and basic logic. The book is quite big and covers a lot of ground -- actually, it is a combination of four books under one cover.
The book is the culmination of research over a period of more than twenty years. It adopts a systematic and scientific approach to tabla learning in order to avoid spending unnecessary time and effort. It is not in conflict with anything taught in the traditional methods. Nor does it require any change in playing styles. It is ideal for rapid learning and mastering of tabla. It is designed to eliminate the need for a teacher.
The book demonstrates the step-by-step development of well over two thousand compositions of all types -- from the very simple to the most complex, from the well known to the not-so-well known to the totally unknown -- and includes a complete theory of tihai. Nothing like it has been available before. All the well-known compositions from all gharanas (styles) are included. These are, however, not simple restatements. Each and every one of them has been developed from scratch in a way that even a child can understand. The majority of the compositions in the book are new, and are as good or better. In order to make the compositions easy to follow a new notation system has been used in the book. It is as precise as the Western Staff notation, and at the same time the simplest possible.
The highlights of the book are:
1. A basic description of the tabla and the theory of sound production.
2. Explanation and illustration of the principles used in developing the compositions.
3. Demonstration of expansions (vistar) of a given theme in the right way, maintaining the integrity of the composition.
4. Demonstration of multiple interpretations of a given composition -- how to create a completely different effect by
rearranging a composition in a different rhythmic pattern without changing the note sequence..
5. Examples of relas of all kinds and rhythmic structures -- in straight rhythms (barabar), triplets (tisra), rhythms of five,
seven, and nine.
6. Examples of laggis and peshkars.
7. Demonstration of the construction of compositions in various talas.
8. Demonstration of the development of various types of fixed compositions (bandishes).
9. An all encompassing theory of tihai.
10. Step-by-step development of well over two thousand compositions (from the very simple to the most complex, from the well-known to the not-so-well-known to the totally unknown).
