About the Artists:
Simultaneously he was taught by Sri Bimal Chatterjee, a leading disciple of Pandit Kashinath Mukherjee-a doyen of Imdadkhani-Etawah gharana. Abhik remained under his affectionate guidance till the age of sixteen when finally he was taken to Pandit Kashinath Mukherjee. Panditji (a leading disciple of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Amir Khan) took Abhik under his wings and soon Abhik blossomed into an artist who is looked upon as one of the torch-bearer of the Imdadkhani-Etawah gharana among the younger generation. He is also undergoing extensive training from Pandit Arvind Parikhji who is an internationally reputed artist and musicologist and senior-most disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Amit Chatterjee is a guitarist, singer, sitarist and composer who combine his heritage in Hindusthani music with many years of playing and studying European, jazz and popular music. He has recorded and performed extensively with artists such as Joe Zawinul (1993 to present), Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Badal Roy, Glen Velez, Layne Redmond, David Lieberman, Paul Winter and Paul Halley. Currently Amit is featured in Zawinul's symphonic work on Phillips Classic 'Stories of the Danube'. He is also part of Zawinul's Grammy-nominated world/jazz recording, My People. He recently finished recording an album that features him as a songwriter and singer with his trio that includes Jorge Alfano on bass and flutes and Randy Crafton on percussion. Amit has also produced former Weather Report and Zawinul percussionist Robert Thomas, Jr's first solo album. Both of these works appear on Tetrad Recordings. His Work as a player and singer has received extensive critical acclaim from musicians and everyday listeners alike.
Amit was a visiting professor for the ethnomusicology department as the University of Miami from 1984-1986 and continues to draw on his multicultural background as a musician and teacher. Akram Khan is an exponent of Ajrara Gharana (school) one of the most respected and oldest style of tabla school. Akram has received tabla instruction from his uncle Ustad Niazu Khan, his grandfather Ustad Mohamed Ahfi Khan, and is currently under the tutelage of his father Ustad Hasmat Khan a disciple of the Ajrara Gharana paragon Ustad Habibuddin Khan. Pandit Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay is a world re-known tabla player was born in music loving family settled in Uttar Pradesh (Benaras). He was initiated to music by his father an amateur vocalist. late Radha Gopal Bandopadhaya. At age nine he started his Tabla lessons from his Guru late Pandit Mahaved Prasad Mishra, a respected, Sangeet Natak Academy and ITC award winner meastro of tabla and thumri belonging to the famous Benaras Gharana. Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury is a disciple of Pandit Subroto Roy-Chowdhury. His training in sitar emphasizes the instrument’s affinity with the ancient veena, associated with Dhrupad music, utilizing techniques which exploit the sitar’s full-potential. Indrajit’s sitar work has been acknowledged worldwide. He has performed at such venues as the Rabindranath Tagore Center Auditorium ICCR (Kolkata), the Indian Embassy in Berlin, the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.) and has had his concerts telecast by Doordarshan (Indian National Television). Indrajit’s recordings appeared on NBC programs in 2009. Mayookh Bhaumik is child prodigy who is a disciple of late Pandit Gnyn Prakesh Ghosh. He has been studying under the instruction of Ustad Sabir Khan son of Ustad Karametullah Khan of the Farukhabad Gharana. Mayookh has performed many duet Tabla Solo concerts with Ustad Sabir Khan in India and abroad. He has also accompanied many masters of Indian Classical Music.
Melvyn Anthony Lalit Gomes born in a Bengali Christian family endowed with rich musical heritage. His grandfather Late Ustad John Gomes, a well known Sitarist, was a devoted disciple of Late Ustad Enayet Khan the doyen of the sitar exponents. At age five he stared learning sitar under the guidane of his father Late Ustad Benjamin Gomes, a disciple of Late Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Imrat Khan. Since 1983 after demise of his father he has been studying under the tutelage of Ustad Imrat Khan. He has been receiving constant guidance from his Guru-brothers, Ustad Nishat Khan, Irshad Khan and Wajahat khan, sons of the great Ustad Imrat Khan, and keeping the trend of unique Guru-Shishya Parampara for three generation. He regularly performs though out India and Europe.
Polash Gomes born in a Bengali Roman Catholic family in Kolkata, India. He follows the line of the distinguished Lucknow baj. He is a disciple of Dr. Mrinal Pal of Lucknow Gharana. He also studied tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. In 1991 he founded of Rageshree Music institute, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination of Indian Music in the West. USTAD ILMAS HUSSAIN KHAN represents the famous LucknowGharana(school) of tabla playing. His musical lineage goes back to the origin of the modern tabla playing system. He is a great grandson of the great Khalifa Abid Hussain Khan, grandson of the inimitable Khalifa Wazeed Hussain Khan, and son of the illustrious Khalifa Afaq Hussain Khan. Like his predecessors, Ilmas succeeds in maintaining a perfect balance between the tabla and the bayan drums, taking advantage of the timbre, sonority, nuances and subtleties of each to the fullest extend.
